DOW (DJIA) Index
by Andrew D. Hyder

The Dow Jones Industrial Average (NYSE: DJI, also called the DJIA, Dow 30, or unofficially the Dow Jones or The Dow) is one of several stock market indices created by nineteenth century Wall Street Journal editor and Dow Jones and Company co-founder Charles Dow. Dow compiled the index as a way to measure the performance of the industrial sector of America's stock markets. It is the oldest continuing U.S. market index, aside from the Dow Jones Transportation Average, which Dow also created.

Today, the average consists of 30 of the largest and most widely held public companies in the United States. The "industrial" segment of the name is mostly historical. Many of the 30 modern member securities have little to do with heavy industry. To compensate for the effects of stock splits and other adjustments, it is currently a scaled average, not the actual average of the prices of its 30 stocks; the sum of the 30 stock prices is divided by a divisor, which changes whenever one of the 30 stocks has a stock split or stock dividend, to generate the value of the index.

The Forecast Market Software system predicts the general direction of the Dow Jones Industrial Average index on a daily basis with great historical success and high degree of accuracy. The advantage of this index is that it is relatively more stable than an individual stock and the Nasdaq 100 index. The purpose of Forecasting this index is to take regular consistent small gains when the forecast is correct. This allows investors to compound their gains, often adding significant additional gains.

The FMS Daily Forecast is available free to investors and market traders. The forecasts allow investors to take profits in rising and falling markets making it an ideal market neutral strategy. To subscribe to the Forecast Market Software daily forecast, Click Here.
